Paolo Massobrio: 'a continuous and surprising search, from Bianchello del Metauro to the liveliness of young Sardinia'

A peculiar oenological picture, recounted by the mostly small or very small wineries of the Belpaese, always new, in a process of "continuous discovery, which brings out realities to be offered the limelight, but also territories, such as Sardinia, capable of churning out increasingly interesting products every year, a true, lively and young phenomenon". Thus, in WineNews, Paolo Massobrio unveils the 'Top Hundred 2022', the 100 best wines of Italy (plus 40 'Outside the Top'), selected together with Marco Gatti, without ever rewarding the wineries of previous years, which indeed photograph the great oenological variety of the Belpaese, but also its ability to grow, change and innovate.

At the top, the "Top of the Tops", the excellence for each category, which see the Amarone della Valpolicella Valpantena 2017 from the Costa Arènte di Grezzana winery excel among the reds, the Valle d'Itria Verdeca "Chakra Essenza" 2020 from Giovanni Aiello di Putignano among the whites, among the rosé wines, Terre di Cosenza San Vito di Luzzi from the Vivacqua di Luzzi winery, among the sparkling wines, Bianchello del Metauro Spumante Brut Metodo Classico Millesimato 'Conte Giulio' 2015 from the Bruscia di San Costanzo winery, and among the passito wines, Vin Santo del Chianti Classico Occhio di Pernice 2016 from Castello di Radda di Radda in Chianti.

"The lion's share goes to Tuscany, with the highest number of awards (21), followed by Piedmont (19), with products that we could define as unusual, such as Moscato secco, Ruché and, above all, Timorasso, a phenomenon capable of attracting the same investments as on Etna. In this regard, in Sicily most of the award-winning wines come from Etna, where the best oenologists and a lot of investment have arrived, but also and above all wines of great satisfaction,' resumes Paolo Massobrio. "Looking back, there are many small wineries that we have discovered and rewarded and that, over the years, have become great, both in terms of quality and international recognition: for example, Santa Caterina di Grazzano Badoglio, discovered 15 years ago in Monferrato. But also Casadei, with Castello del Trebbio, which we tasted in 2002 and which today is a reference point for amphora wine. And then there are appellations, territories and varieties yet to be discovered. I am thinking of Bianchello del Metauro, which this year gave us the best sparkling wine of the year. Or the wineries producing wine from Baratuciat grapes, destined to become a phenomenon like Timorasso. Another curious thing is to discover in Lombardy the bubbles of the province of Bergamo, which are very interesting, not by chance,' concludes Paolo Massobrio, curator, with Marco Gatti, of the 'Top Hundred', 'just a stone's throw from Franciacorta ...'.
